A Day at the Flea Market

Memorial Day not only marks the day to pay our respects to fallen soldiers and say thank you to those who have served, but around the Rockford area, it also marks the bi-annual Memorial Day/Labor Day flea market.

This has been a longstanding tradition with my family and I ever since I can remember-Each year we would all get up early and take the drive into town so we can walk among the vendors and look at all the goodies they have to offer.

The past year or two, I haven't been able to go because of health reasons, and I didn't think I was going to be able to go this year because stupid Tom had to show up and ruin every plan I had. Isn't that how it goes though?

But I bested him! Even though I was feeling like death warmed over, I hadn't showered in days, and I had to go in the wheelchair, I made it to that Memorial Day flea market :)

I actually went because my family, who had gone earlier that morning, said there was a certain jewelry designer who wanted to meet me! Can you believe it, she wanted to meet ME! I was wheeled over to her booth and we had a nice chat about our jewelry, and online venues, and local craft shows; I gave her my business card and let her flip through the book I made for just these occasions. I really do hope I hear from her in the near future. And wouldn't you know it, though, right next to her was ANOTHER jewelry designer who wanted to meet me, and actually asked my advice on her pieces! I was thrilled to be among fellow artists who actually wanted to 'talk shop.'

After we said our goodbyes {I gave the other jewelry designer my card as well to keep in touch}, it was off to check out what I could find. My sole purpose for going to the flea market that day: Jewelry! Since I can't make my handmade stuff as of yet, I needed to find some new stock for my vintage shop :)

About $70 dollars, 3 hours, and two over-heated woman later {it was upwards of 90 degrees on Monday!}, I'm happy to say I did quite some damage. It was my biggest spending spree to date, and yes, I am a little nervous about spending that much, but I have faith it will all pan out.

Here are some pictures of my finds:

Can you believe I got those display boxes for just $5.00! Yes, $5 bucks for BOTH of them. I was shocked! That lady was very sweet though-I guess I reminded her of her niece who had a medical condition, as well. As I was going to pay, she said she was going to give me a deal. As soon as she said that, she quickly whirled around said, "Not because you're in the wheelchair though!" Lol

All in all, I had a wonderful day. A very big heartfelt thank you goes to my mom. She had already been there once that day and she doesn't do very well in the heat {remember, 90+ degrees out}, but when I got up and asked, she had no problem loading the wheelchair in the car and taking me.

I love my mommy :)

How great that people were interested in what you had to say regarding jewelry. You scored some great deals. That was, indeed, kind of your mom to do.

As you should. You have a pretty neat little mom there to do so much for her baby girl! How nice you found so many wonderful great finds, and nice people to deal with. You be careful of being out in the heat too!
